In the Middle Ages, when bubonic plague (also know as the Black Death) ran rampant among the people, plague doctors rose to the citizens' rescue. Although few of them were accomplished physicians (and some had no medical background whatsoever) they took up a job no one else wanted: attempting to save those stricken with the Black Death.
